Safety First: Why We Test for Asbestos
Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring fibrous minerals once widely used in building materials for insulation, fireproofing and soundproofing because of their heat resistance and tensile strength; however, inhalation of airborne asbestos fibres can cause serious health issues such as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, so older homes and buildings that may contain asbestos-containing materials (e.g., pipe insulation, ceiling tiles, vinyl flooring, and cement products) should be handled cautiously by trained professionals who follow provincial regulations for testing, removal and disposal to minimise exposure and protect occupants and workers.
